What is Night to Shine?

Night to Shine is an unforgettable prom night experience, centered on God’s love, for people with special needs, ages 14 and older. This worldwide movement is already set to take place next year in 50 states across the nation and 24 countries around the world…and the numbers continue to grow!

As a guest of Night to Shine Wilmington, you will be dropped off at Port City Community Church where you will check-in, be paired with a buddy for the evening, have your hair or makeup done, and shoes shined all in preparation for your big night. Once you are ready, you will enter the limousine that will take you to the main event at Port City Community Church. Upon arriving at Port City every guest will walk the red carpet, and enjoy dancing, food, karaoke, games and more.

Night to Shine will take place on February 7, 2024.
6:30-9:00pm Main Event at Port City Community Church.

Guest check-in, buddy pairing, hair, makeup, and shoeshine will be held at Port City Community Church, then guests will ride in a limousine around Port City Community Church.

Is there a dress code?

Guests:
For participants, ladies may wear gowns/formalwear or nice dresses and gentlemen may wear a suit or tux.

Guests can visit Shine Boutique at Cinderella's Closet to pick out their outfit! Details for this event will be announced at a later date.

Volunteers:
Semi-formal to formal if you are a buddy, and others may dress according to their position.

What positions can I volunteer for?

Decoration/Set up: Be available the day of the event to help decorate and set up event.

Tear Down Team/Clean up: Take down decorations, tables, chairs, etc. and clean up the event space.

Caregivers Room: Love on the parents/caretakers by serving food, spending time getting to know them, praying for them and making them feel special while they relax and enjoy the evening.

Hair and Make-up: Assist leader with the set-up of the salon area. Welcome each guest to a salon station for hair and make-up. Chat with them while you pamper them and make them feel special.

Shoe Shine Team: Arrive at the designated time and assist set-up team with the shoe shine area. Welcome each guest to a seat for a shoe shine. Chat with them while you pamper them and make them feel important.

Food Service: Assist team leader with food preparation, set-up, serving food and beverages, in the main event and caregivers room. Be knowledgeable about the items and assist guests in finding what they would like (especially if they have dietary restrictions or allergies) and refill food warmers, drinks, and snacks.

Coat Check/Lost and Found/Goodie bags: Greet guests, take their coats, label them, and hang them. As guests leave, retrieve their coats, make sure they didn't leave anything behind (lost and found) and give them a goodie bag.

Volunteer Check-in/Check Out: Greet volunteers, check them in, give name badges and direct them to their teamleader.  

Registration: Warmly greet guests, check them in and direct them to the red carpet. At the conclusion of the eventpass out official NTS favors.

Crowns and Tiaras: As guests prepare to enter the limousine, you will assist the guest in the placement of the crown or tiara, telling them how handsome and beautiful they are and how much Gods loves them.  

Paparazzi/Greeters/Red Carpet: Celebrate our guests! You will be part of the paparazzi as guests make their waydown the red carpet. You will cheer our guests, and treat participants like honored guests and celebrities.  

Parking: Maintain a parking pattern, direct traffic for easy entry and exit, assist guests as they exit vehicles and helpthem find registration table. Be available as guests return to their vehicles following the event.  

Corn Hole: Be enthusiastic with our guests and assist guest in playing a game of corn hole.

Karaoke: Help set up and prepare room. Help guests sign up for the song they would like to sing, help put singing groups together based on song requests, and be enthusiastic with guests.  

Photo Booth: Help keep the photo booth running and operating smoothly.  

Flowers: Assist florist with unloading and properly laying out corsages and boutonnieres. Help guests select and pin ontheir flowers. Dance

Floor Team: Monitor the dance floor and the perimeter to make sure there are no “wallflowers” and thateveryone is having a good time.

Limousine Attendants: help assist guests in and out of the limo.

Buddies: Your job is to accompany and assist assigned guest throughout the evening, providing companionship and any assistance they may need during the event. Sit with their guest while eating, dance or ride in the limo. Be able to engage with them in conversation.  Each honored guest will be paired with a buddy. This will ensure a safe and enjoyable evening. You will need to be able to attend a mandatory training meeting prior to the Event (TBD).

Bathroom Attendants Team: Help guests find the restroom, and offer assistance in the restroom if needed.

If I sign up to volunteer, will there be training and is attending it mandatory?

Yes. All volunteers will receive training on guest interactions including, how to recognize and avoid the use of offensive terms and phrases, the development of people first language skills, general tips for communicating, and how to prevent and handle awkward or uncomfortable situation. In addition, specific training will be provided for each of the volunteer positions.

Dates and times for training for Volunteers will be announced at a later date.

It is highly encouraged that you attend the training event prior to helping with the event.

What exactly is a Buddy?

A buddy is volunteer that will be accompanying a guest throughout the evening. They are responsible for ensuring that their guest has a wonderful, safe and comfortable experience during Night to Shine. 

Can a friend or family member be a companion?

If you have a family member or friend who wants to come and be your companion for the night please have them sign up as a volunteer. When they sign up as a volunteer, they need to add in the comment section that they want to specifically be a companion with you and please make sure they list your name so we can correctly place you together.

Can our church's high school youth group volunteer?

Yes. Anyone from 12 years old and up can help with this event.  However, if the volunteer is 12-16 years old they need to have a parent volunteering at the event as well with them.  If a volunteer is under the age of 18 they will need a parent to sign a permission form and waiver before they can participate.  All of the youth will have still have to attend one of the mandatory training sessions.

What is the caregiver's room?

Through Night to Shine, we want to honor the incredible parents, family members, and caretakers for their lifetime commitment to caring for their loved ones with special needs. The caregiver's room (located in the same building as the Night to Shine prom) will provide the opportunity to rest and enjoy a night off, knowing that their loved one is having an amazing time in a safe, friendly, and Christ-centered environment with a personally assigned companion. Comfortable seating, food, beverages, and entertainment will be provided.

*There will be a limit of 2 caregivers per guest.

Is this a Christian event?

This event is open to all people with special needs and all qualified volunteers. It is sponsored by the Tim Tebow Foundation, a Christian organization and is being hosted at area churches.

Will a meal be served?

Yes, a light buffet dinner will be served for guests. Refreshments will also be available for parents and caregivers in the Respite Room.

If you are volunteering, please eat before you come. There will be waters and snacks available.

What if I have food allergies?

Gluten-free, dairy-free and sugar-free options will be available.

What if the sounds/activities at the event become overwhelming?

We offer a Sensory Room where all guests are welcome to come enjoy a quiet and peaceful environment to rest and regroup. We will also have therapy animals roaming the event.
